INFORMATION ABOUT THE ADDICTION CENTRE
The Addiction Centre in the Psychological Medicine Hospital is comprised of three admission wards, Rehabilitation Wards and an out-patient department and also a day facility.
The centre offers a fully comprehensive bio psychosocial spiritual approach to tretment delivered by a multi disciplinary team using internationally accepted treatment methods.
The three admission wards offer a detoxification, assessment and pre rehabilitation service. The emphasis is on achieving complete abstinence and medicationis kept to a minimum except for short-term medication in reducing dosage for detoxification. Benzodiazipines (valium type of drugs) are not prescribed to addicts and there is no long term maintenance medication except antidepressants where clinically indicated.
Any disruptive behaviour or failure to comply with the treatment programme will result in discharge from the programme. Although any punitive element is removed from the treatment programme, certain rules and regulations must be obeyed, even by voluntary patients and a contract to treatment must be signed and agreed.
The rehabilitation programme lasts on average, six weeks and is based mainly on the 12 step (Minnesota) counselling model but includes the following:-
Individual therapy and counselling
Group therapy
Family work and family support groups
Community meetings
Psycho-education
Relapse prevention
Recreational activities
Participation in activities organised by Narcotics anonymous
Participation in activities organised by religious group
All patients are excepted to be off all medication prior to transfer to the rehabilitation ward.
It should be borne in mind that the inpatient stay is only start of treatment and that follow up treatment in the outpatient department after discharge is equally important. Prior to discharge a written discharge and after care plan will be drawn up for each patient which they will be encouraged to follow, coupled with ongoing support from Narcotics Anonymous and religious groups in the community. Participation of family members in the treatment process is also very important.
